Clearing the Air (CTA)

NBLIC III’s fourth Best Practice education campaignto educate, engage and empower the African American community and organizational leaders in the fight against tobacco use.

Tobacco use is killing our communities. Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths in men and women. More than 87% of lung cancers are smoking related. African American women have the highest incidence rates of lung cancer. African Americans represent only 12% of the population; with more than 24% of all asthma deaths (from second hand smoking) occurring in this population. The asthma attack prevalence rate among African Americans is more than 31% higher than that for whites. Advertising of tobacco products in major black publications is disproportionate to comparable white publications. Our communities need to be educated.
