Gala of Hope

In 1998, 103 beauty salons participated in Stay Beautiful – Stay Alive, a cancer awareness project.  2, 500 African American women participated in this effort.  In appreciation of the unparalleled level of support and cooperation from beauty salon owners, the National Black Leadership Initiative on Cancer held A Gala of Hope at the Dusable Museum of African American History in April, 1999.  400 people attended this event.

Beauty salon owners who vigorously promoted the cancer awareness project in their salon and encouraged many of their clients to participate were recognized and given awards.

The Owner of Desi’s Full Service Salon won a monetary award and a trip to the Bahamas for having 75 clients on the Saturday of the presentation at her salon.  Salon owners who participated in this project said they have clients who have died and some who are suffering from breast cancer.  This project, they said, was their way of contributing to the health of the community.

At the Gala of Hope, the Quilt of Hope was unveiled and the Love in a Pot project was launched.
